About

A Curious Herbal is a botanical book published in 1737. It was written and illustrated by Elizabeth Blackwell, who was the daughter of a wealthy merchant in Aberdeen, Scotland. Blackwell's husband, Alexander, was a physician who was imprisoned for debt, and Blackwell created the book as a way to earn money to pay off his debts and secure his release.

The illustrations were created by Elizabeth Blackwell herself. Blackwell was an artist and botanical illustrator who created the drawings for the book based on specimens she observed in the Chelsea Physic Garden in London. The engravings were then produced on folio copper plates for the book's publication.

The work was quite successful when it was first published, and it was reprinted several times over the next few decades. It was popular among both physicians and apothecaries, as well as the general public. The book is also notable for being one of the first botanical books to be illustrated by a woman.
