About
Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, who began his career as an apprentice to a woodblock printmaker and went on to create thousands of prints over the course of his career. He was particularly known for his use of color and his ability to capture the mood and atmosphere of different landscapes.
His series called "Ronin" is a collection of woodblock prints that depict various ronin or masterless samurai. The series consists of 11 prints, each showing a different ronin with a brief description of their story.
Ronin were samurai who had lost their masters, either through the death or disgrace of their lord. As a result, they were left without a source of income or protection and were often forced to become wandering mercenaries or take up a life of crime.
Hiroshige's prints in the "Ronin" series capture the rugged and dangerous life of these wandering samurai. The prints show the ronin in various poses, often with swords drawn or in combat with other ronin. The series was created in the mid-1800s and was popular with both Japanese and Western audiences, who were fascinated by the exoticism of Japanese culture.
