About

Ando Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, known for his landscapes, particularly his series of prints titled "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" and "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo."

Hiroshige began his career as an apprentice to a woodblock printmaker, and he went on to create thousands of prints over the course of his career. He was particularly known for his use of color and his ability to capture the mood and atmosphere of different landscapes.

In "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido," Hiroshige depicted the journey along the Tokaido highway from Edo to Kyoto, with a print for each of the fifty-three stops along the way. The series was highly popular and influential, and it remains one of Hiroshige's most famous works.
