About

Archibald Thorburn (1860-1935) was a Scottish artist and naturalist known for his highly detailed paintings and illustrations of birds and other wildlife. He is considered one of the greatest bird illustrators of all time and his work has had a significant influence on the field of ornithology.

Thorburn was born into a family of wildlife artists and grew up surrounded by nature in Scotland. He studied art in London and began his career as a professional illustrator, producing illustrations for books and magazines on a variety of topics, including hunting, fishing, and natural history.

However, it was his bird illustrations that brought him the most fame and recognition. Thorburn's paintings and sketches captured the beauty and complexity of birds, with a particular focus on their natural habitats and behavior. He was known for his attention to detail, using a mix of watercolors and gouache to create highly realistic and accurate depictions of his subjects.
