About

Bairei Gakan, also known as Kono Bairei (1844-1895), was a Japanese painter and one of the most important artists of the Rinpa school in the Meiji period.

Bairei was born in Kyoto, Japan and began his artistic training at a young age. He studied under several prominent artists, including Shibata Zeshin, and developed a unique style that combined traditional Japanese painting techniques with a modern sensibility.

Bairei is known for his paintings of birds and flowers, which are characterized by their delicate brushwork and soft, muted colors. He was also an accomplished calligrapher and created a number of calligraphic works throughout his career.
