About
Catherine Parr Strickland Traill was a British-Canadian author and naturalist who is known for her writings on Canadian flora and fauna. Agnes Fitzgibbon was a Canadian artist and illustrator who worked with Traill on several of her books.
Canadian Wild Flowers features illustrations and descriptions of a variety of wildflowers found in Canada. The book is organized by the seasons, with chapters on spring, summer, and autumn flowers, as well as a section on winter plants.
The illustrations in the work are particularly notable, as they were hand-colored lithographs created by Agnes Fitzgibbon. The illustrations are accompanied by descriptions of each plant, including information on its habitat, growing conditions, and traditional uses.
The book was one of the first of its kind in Canada, and it helped to popularize an interest in Canadian flora and horticulture. It also played a role in promoting the idea of using native plants in gardening and landscaping, rather than relying solely on imported species.
