About

Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as Canaletto, was an Italian painter known for his vedute, or cityscapes, of Venice. He was born on October 28, 1697, in Venice, Italy, and died on April 19, 1768, in Venice.

Canaletto was part of a family of painters and was trained by his father, Bernardo Canal. He began his career as a theatrical scene painter before turning to painting cityscapes. He was particularly interested in capturing the architecture and atmosphere of Venice, and his paintings often depicted the city's canals, bridges, and churches.

Canaletto was a master of perspective and composition, and his paintings are characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and their ability to convey a sense of space and depth. He often worked in a realistic style, using rich colors and subtle tonal variations to create the illusion of light and shadow.  His paintings were widely popular in his time, and he was celebrated as one of the foremost painters of the Venetian school.
