About
Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) was an Italian painter who is considered one of the most influential figures in the development of Baroque art. He was born in Milan, Italy, and spent much of his career working in Rome and Naples.
Caravaggio's work is characterized by his dramatic use of chiaroscuro, or the contrast between light and dark. He was also known for his realism and his vivid depictions of everyday life. His most famous works include The Calling of St. Matthew, The Entombment of Christ, and Judith Beheading Holofernes.
Caravaggio's life was marked by a series of scandals and controversies, including several instances of violence and a prison sentence for murder. Despite these difficulties, his work was highly sought after during his lifetime, and he had a significant impact on the development of Baroque art in Italy and beyond.
Today, Caravaggio is widely regarded as one of the greatest painters in Western art history, and his influence can be seen in the work of artists such as Rembrandt, Rubens, and Velázquez.
