About
Pedro de Rojas, a Spanish cartoonist, created this series of chromolithograph postcards that reimagined the adventures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in the twentieth century. The postcards feature colorful illustrations of the Knight of the Melancholy Countenance battling windmills, fighting with what appears to be a park ranger, entering a grand hotel with an umbrella, and jousting while riding in a motorcar. The series follows the adventures of Cervantes' Quixote closely, from his obsession with books of chivalry to his death, and is part of a long tradition of illustrating the exploits of the hapless knight. Rojas' life is not well-documented, but we know that he was born in Seville in 1873, worked for Madrid newspapers in his twenties, moved to Cuba in 1903, and later lived in Buenos Aires until his death on September 4, 1947.
