The book is a comprehensive survey of the insect species found in Europe, with detailed descriptions of their morphology, behavior, and distribution.

The work was a significant contribution to the study of insects in Europe, as it provided a comprehensive survey of the species present in the region at the time of publication. It was written by Johann Heinrich Sulzer, a Swiss physician and naturalist, and Carl von Linné, a Swedish botanist and zoologist known as the father of modern taxonomy. Johann Jacob Römer, a Swiss naturalist and physician, also contributed to the book.
