Edgar Degas was a French painter and sculptor who lived from 1834 to 1917. He is known for his depictions of modern life, particularly ballet dancers, and for his pioneering use of pastels. His work is often classified as Impressionist, although his style and subject matter were more varied than that of many other Impressionist painters.

Degas was born into an aristocratic family in Paris and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was influenced by the Impressionist movement, but also drew inspiration from classical art and the works of earlier masters such as Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Eugène Delacroix.

Degas' paintings often depicted scenes from modern life, such as ballet dancers, horse racing, and cafe scenes. He was interested in capturing movement and spontaneity in his work, and experimented with unusual angles and cropping in his compositions.

Degas' work had a significant influence on the development of modern art, particularly in his use of pastels and his focus on capturing movement and spontaneity. He was also an important influence on the Post-Impressionist and Symbolist movements.
