About
Édouard Manet was a French painter who lived from 1832 to 1883 and is considered one of the pioneers of modern art. He is particularly known for his works that bridge the gap between Realism and Impressionism.
Manet was born into a wealthy family in Paris and studied art at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was influenced by the Realist painters of his time, but also drew inspiration from earlier masters such as Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Goya.
Manet's paintings often depicted contemporary life in Paris, particularly the urban bourgeoisie and scenes of cafe culture. He was interested in exploring the tensions between traditional academic art and the changing world around him, and his work was often controversial for its frankness and lack of idealization.
Manet's work was a significant influence on the development of Impressionism, particularly in his use of color and light. His later works became increasingly impressionistic in style, and he was a friend and mentor to many of the Impressionist painters of his time.
