About

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a German expressionist painter and printmaker who lived from 1880 to 1938. He was one of the founding members of the Die Brücke (The Bridge) group of artists, which was formed in 1905 in Dresden, Germany. Kirchner was known for his bold use of color and simplified forms, which were often used to express the anxieties and tensions of modern life.

Kirchner's work was influenced by a range of sources, including the art of indigenous cultures, contemporary movements such as Fauvism and Cubism, and the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche. His paintings often featured urban scenes, portraits, and nudes, and he also created a significant body of work in the medium of printmaking.

Kirchner's career was interrupted by World War I, during which he served as a medical orderly. After the war, he moved to Switzerland, where he continued to produce art until his death by suicide in 1938. Despite the tragic end to his life, Kirchner's work has had a lasting impact on the art world and continues to be celebrated for its vivid colors and expressive forms.
