About

George Inness was an American landscape painter, born on May 1, 1825, in Newburgh, New York. He is known for his luminous, atmospheric landscapes, which are characterized by their expressive use of color and light.

Inness began his career as an artist in the Hudson River School, a group of American landscape painters who were active in the mid-19th century. He later moved to Europe, where he was influenced by the Barbizon School of French landscape painters, who emphasized the mood and emotion of the landscape over its topographical accuracy.

Inness returned to the United States in the 1860s, and his paintings underwent a transformation as he began to experiment with color and composition. He became interested in the spiritual aspects of nature, and his later works are characterized by a mystical quality, with elements of abstraction and a focus on the interplay of light and dark.
