Gustav Klimt was an Austrian painter and a prominent figure in the Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born on July 14, 1862, in Baumgarten, a suburb of Vienna, Austria, and died on February 6, 1918, in Vienna.

Klimt began his career as a decorative painter and worked on murals and ceilings in public buildings, including the Vienna Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum. However, he is best known for his paintings, which are characterized by their sensuous, decorative style and their use of gold leaf and ornamental motifs.

Klimt's most famous works are his portraits of women, which often depict them in a highly eroticized and stylized manner. He frequently used geometric shapes, decorative patterns, and gold leaf to create a sense of luxury and opulence in his paintings. Some of his most well-known works include "The Kiss," "Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I," and "Judith and the Head of Holofernes."

Klimt was also a founding member of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who broke away from the traditional art establishment in Austria and sought to create a new, modern style of art. He was heavily influenced by the work of Japanese artists, as well as the decorative arts of the Middle East and ancient Egypt.
