About

Hataumajirushi Ezu is a collection of illustrations of Japanese war flags and banners that were used during the Edo period (1603-1868) in Japan. The book was first published in 1855, and contains over 600 color illustrations of flags and banners, as well as detailed descriptions of their meanings and significance.

The flags and banners depicted in Hataumajirushi Ezu were used by the samurai class, who were the military nobility of Japan during the Edo period. These flags and banners were an important part of samurai culture, and were used to identify individual warriors and their clans on the battlefield.

Each flag and banner had its own unique design and color scheme, and often featured images of animals, plants, or other symbols that held specific meanings within Japanese culture. For example, a flag with a tiger on it represented courage and strength, while a banner with a pine tree symbolized longevity and endurance.
