About
Henri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) was a French painter and one of the leading members of the Neo-Impressionist movement. He was born in Douai, France, and initially trained as a ceramicist before turning his attention to painting.
Cross was particularly interested in the use of color and light, and he developed a unique style that involved painting in small dots of pure color, known as Pointillism. This technique was pioneered by Georges Seurat and other Neo-Impressionist painters, but Cross developed his own distinctive style within this movement.
Cross often painted landscapes and seascapes, and he was particularly drawn to the Mediterranean region, where he spent much of his life. His paintings are known for their bright colors and shimmering, almost ethereal quality, and he was particularly skilled at capturing the play of light on water.
Cross's work was not always well-received during his lifetime, but he became more widely recognized after his death.
