About
Henri Georges Meunier was a Belgian painter and sculptor who lived from 1873 to 1922. He was associated with the Symbolist movement, a literary and artistic movement that sought to express subjective and mystical ideas through visual and literary language.
Meunier's work was influenced by the Industrial Revolution and he often depicted industrial workers in his paintings and sculptures. He had a deep concern for the social issues of his time and his work reflected this concern. He depicted the harsh realities of working-class life, often showing workers in factories and mines.
Meunier's paintings are characterized by their somber colors and strong contrasts, and his sculptures often have a rough, unpolished texture. His work has been compared to that of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin, with whom he had a brief collaboration.
Meunier was also involved in the decorative arts and designed furniture and ceramics. He was associated with the Art Nouveau movement, which was characterized by its use of organic forms and decorative motifs.
