About
Illustrations of New Species of Exotic Butterflies: Selected Chiefly from the Collections of W. Wilson Saunders and William C. Hewitson is a book of illustrations and descriptions of new and rare butterfly species, published in 1856. The book was written by John William Western, an entomologist and illustrator, and was dedicated to W. Wilson Saunders and William C. Hewitson, two prominent butterfly collectors and naturalists of the time.
The book features 50 hand-colored lithographs of exotic butterfly species from around the world, with each plate accompanied by a description of the species, its habitat, and its behavior. The illustrations were made using specimens from the collections of Saunders and Hewitson, both of whom had extensive collections of butterflies from all over the world.
The book was significant at the time of its publication because it introduced many new and previously unknown butterfly species to the scientific community. It also contributed to the growing interest in butterfly collecting and study during the mid-19th century, as naturalists and collectors sought to explore and document the diversity of insect life around the world.
