The book is a comprehensive catalogue of the lepidopterous (butterfly and moth) insects of Great Britain, featuring over 2,000 color illustrations.

Wood was a British naturalist and entomologist who specialized in the study of insects, particularly butterflies and moths. Index Entomologicus was part of his effort to create a comprehensive record of the lepidopterous insects of Great Britain.
