J.M.W. Turner, full name Joseph Mallord William Turner, was a British painter and one of the most important figures in the history of landscape painting. He was born on April 23, 1775, in Covent Garden, London, and died on December 19, 1851, in Chelsea, London.

Turner was a prolific artist, creating over 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolors, and numerous sketches and drawings during his career. He is best known for his atmospheric landscapes and seascapes, which often conveyed the power of nature and the sublime. His innovative use of light and color, as well as his loose brushwork, influenced many artists who came after him, including the Impressionists.

Turner was a member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and his work was exhibited there throughout his career. He was also a traveler, visiting various parts of Europe and producing many works inspired by his journeys.
