About

These pages are selected from Waka dairin shō, a book that was written in Japan in 1700 by the poet and scholar Kinoshita Chōshō. The book is a collection of essays on waka, a traditional form of Japanese poetry that dates back to the 8th century.

The title Waka dairin shō roughly translates to "Discourses on the Great Forest of Japanese Poetry," which reflects the book's focus on exploring the vast and diverse world of waka. In addition to providing detailed analysis and commentary on waka, the book also includes examples of waka written by Chōshō himself, as well as by other famous poets of the time. Chōshō's goal in writing the book was to educate readers about the beauty and complexity of waka, and to inspire them to create their own poetry in the traditional style.
