About

The Naturalist's Library is a collection of books on natural history written by Sir William Jardine and edited by James Duncan. The series was first published in Edinburgh, Scotland between 1833 and 1843. It was one of the most comprehensive collections of natural history ever published and covered a wide range of topics, including botany, zoology, and ornithology.

Each volume of the series focused on a specific topic or group of animals, such as butterflies, birds, or fish. The books were beautifully illustrated with detailed engravings and lithographs of the animals and their habitats. Many of the illustrations were done by well-known artists of the time, such as John James Audubon and Edward Lear.

The volume on butterflies in The Naturalist's Library was significant because it was one of the first books to focus exclusively on butterflies as a subject. It helped to popularize butterfly collecting as a hobby and sparked a growing interest in the study of butterflies and other insects.
