About

Jinta Hariyama was a Japanese pyrotechnist who established The Hirayama Fireworks company in Yokohama in 1877. He was born in Mikawa Province (now part of Aichi Prefecture) and is credited with being one of the first pyrotechnists in Japan to incorporate brighter colors into fireworks displays. He was also responsible for creating a fireworks show for Ulysses S. Grant during his visit to Japan in 1879. This collection comes from the work titled Illustrated Catalogue of Daylight Bomb Shells from 1883.

In 1883, Hariyama made history by becoming the first Japanese individual to register a patent in the United States, two years before Japan established its own patent registry. His patent was for "Daylight Fire-Works." Despite his achievements, he passed away in 1900.
