About

John Frederick Herring Sr. (1795-1865) was a British painter known for his equestrian and animal paintings, particularly his depictions of horses and racing scenes. He was one of the most successful painters of sporting subjects in the 19th century and his work is highly sought after by collectors today.

Herring was born in Surrey, England and began his career as a coachman and horse trainer before turning to painting. He gained recognition for his work early on, winning prizes at the Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of British Artists. His paintings were highly prized by wealthy patrons and he received commissions from members of the royal family, including Queen Victoria.

Herring's paintings are notable for their attention to detail and accuracy in depicting horse anatomy and movement. He often portrayed horses in motion, capturing the speed and excitement of racing scenes. His paintings also often included other animals, such as dogs, deer, and birds.

Herring's sons, John Frederick Herring Jr. and Charles Herring, also became successful painters of equestrian and animal subjects.
