About
Joseph Binder (1898-1972) was an Austrian artist and graphic designer who created a series of biblical artworks for the United States Navy in the 1940s. The artworks were intended to decorate the chapels on board US Navy ships, and were commissioned by the Navy's Bureau of Aeronautics.
Binder's biblical artworks depicted scenes from both the Old and New Testaments, including the Creation, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. The artworks were rendered in a stylized and modernist manner, with bold colors and simplified forms. They were intended to convey the timeless and universal themes of the Bible to sailors of all faiths.
The artworks were produced using a variety of techniques, including lithography, screen printing, and linocut. They were printed on large sheets of paper, which were then mounted and framed for display in the ship's chapels.
Binder's biblical artworks were well-received by the Navy and were widely praised for their striking and modernist style. They helped to create a new and innovative visual language for religious art, which combined traditional themes with contemporary design.
