About

Jules Chéret (1836-1932) was a French painter and lithographer who is considered one of the pioneers of the modern poster. Born in Paris, Chéret began his career as a lithographer in the mid-1850s, and his early work consisted primarily of prints and illustrations for books and magazines.

In the late 1870s, Chéret began to experiment with the new medium of color lithography, and he quickly gained a reputation for his bold, colorful designs that were widely used in advertising posters for products and events such as cabarets, theaters, and dance halls. His posters were notable for their use of vivid colors, fluid lines, and attractive women, which became a signature of his style.

Chéret's posters were highly influential in the development of modern advertising, and he is credited with helping to establish the importance of visual communication in advertising. His work also had a significant impact on the development of Art Nouveau, and he was a key figure in the Parisian art scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
