About

Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942) was a Japanese artist and designer who was instrumental in the development of the modern Japanese design aesthetic. He was born in Kyoto, Japan, and grew up in a family of traditional craftsmen.

Sekka began his career as a painter, studying under the prominent Japanese artist Kōno Bairei. However, he soon became interested in design, and began experimenting with a wide range of mediums, including ceramics, textiles, lacquerware, and woodblock printing.

Sekka's designs were highly innovative and unique, combining traditional Japanese techniques and motifs with a modern sense of style and design. He was particularly known for his use of bold colors and patterns, as well as his incorporation of abstract and geometric shapes.

In addition to his work as a designer, Sekka was also involved in the Japanese art world as a teacher and curator. He taught at several art schools in Tokyo and Kyoto, and curated a number of exhibitions of traditional Japanese art.
