Katsukawa Shunko (1743-1812) was born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and studied under the artist Shunsho, who was one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the time. Shunko continued the tradition of the Katsukawa school, which specialized in portraits of actors, and he became one of the most successful and popular artists of his generation.

Shunko's prints are known for their elegant, refined style, and his skillful use of color and line. He was particularly adept at capturing the likeness and personality of his subjects, and his portraits of kabuki actors are highly regarded for their accuracy and detail. Shunko also created prints featuring beautiful women and scenes from everyday life, which were popular with audiences of the time. His prints often featured a delicate, pastel color palette and a sense of calm and serenity.

Shunko's work had a significant influence on later ukiyo-e artists, and his elegant style and refined technique continue to be admired by art lovers today.
