Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was a Japanese artist and printmaker, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the ukiyo-e tradition of woodblock printing. Throughout his long career, Hokusai worked in a variety of styles and media, including painting, illustration, and book design. He was known for his technical skill and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects with minimal means. His work had a profound impact on the development of Japanese art and influenced many Western artists, including Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. Hokusai continued to work prolifically well into his eighties, producing some of his most iconic and celebrated works in his final years.

In addition to his love for the natural world and Mt. Fuji in particular, much of Hokusai’s work was inspired by Japanese folklore and mythology, and he frequently depicted scenes from these stories in his art. He was particularly interested in the supernatural and the grotesque, and created many prints and paintings featuring ghosts, demons, and otherworldly creatures.

In addition to these traditional sources of inspiration, Hokusai was also influenced by Western art and culture. He was one of the first Japanese artists to experiment with perspective and shading, and he incorporated elements of Western-style painting into his work.
