Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist who is best known for his prints depicting beautiful women, or bijin-ga, during the late Edo period (1603-1868). Utamaro was particularly skilled at capturing the feminine beauty and grace of his subjects, and his works were highly popular with the urban populace of Edo.

Utamaro's bijin-ga prints were characterized by their realism and attention to detail, particularly in the depiction of clothing, hair, and facial expressions. Utamaro also created prints depicting landscapes and scenes from the kabuki theater, but his bijin-ga prints remain his most famous and influential works. His style and subject matter had a significant impact on later ukiyo-e artists, and his influence can be seen in the work of artists such as Toshusai Sharaku and Katsushika Hokusai.

Utamaro's life and work were cut short when he was arrested in 1804 for producing prints that were deemed to be critical of the shogunate. He spent several months in prison and was banned from creating prints for several years after his release. Despite this, Utamaro remains one of the most celebrated and influential ukiyo-e artists in Japanese history.
