About

Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915) was born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and studied under the ukiyo-e artist Kawanabe Kyosai. He later developed his own style, which combined elements of traditional ukiyo-e with a more Western-style use of perspective and shading.

Kiyochika's prints often depicted the bustling streets and cityscapes of Edo and other urban areas, capturing the rapid modernization and Westernization of Japan during the Meiji period. He was also known for his prints of military scenes, which were highly popular during the Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War.

Kiyochika's use of dramatic lighting and shadow, bold compositions, and vibrant colors set him apart from his contemporaries and had a significant influence on later Japanese artists. He was also a prolific illustrator and newspaper reporter, and his work was highly regarded for its historical and journalistic value.
