About

Mikuláš Galanda (1895-1938) was a Slovak painter and graphic artist. He is considered one of the most important figures of Slovak modern art. Galanda studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and later in Paris and Italy.

Galanda's art was heavily influenced by the Cubist and Expressionist movements. He was known for his use of bold colors and geometric shapes in his paintings and prints. Galanda often depicted scenes from Slovak rural life, as well as portraits and still lifes.

In addition to his artistic pursuits, Galanda was also involved in political and cultural activities. He was a member of the Czechoslovak Communist Party, and his artwork often reflected his political beliefs.

Tragically, Galanda's life was cut short when he was arrested by the Czechoslovak authorities in 1938 on charges of espionage. He died in prison shortly thereafter. Despite his untimely death, Galanda's contributions to Slovak art continue to be celebrated and remembered to this day.
