About

Conchyliologie Minéralogique de la Grande Bretagne is a book written and illustrated by James Sowerby, a British naturalist and illustrator, and translated into French by Édouard Desor. The book was published in 1837 and focuses on the mineralogy and conchology (study of shells) of Great Britain.

The illustrations in the book are particularly noteworthy, as they were created using lithography, a technique that allowed for highly detailed and accurate depictions of shells and minerals. The book includes over 700 hand-colored lithographs, each accompanied by detailed descriptions of the species, including their size, shape, and other distinguishing features.

The book also includes a preface by Louis Agassiz, a prominent Swiss-American naturalist and geologist, who praised Sowerby's work for its scientific accuracy and attention to detail.

Conchyliologie Minéralogique de la Grande Bretagne was highly regarded in its time and is still considered an important reference work for researchers and enthusiasts in the fields of conchology and mineralogy.
