About

Morimoto Toko was a Japanese artist born in Tokyo in 1880, and is known for his works in the Nihonga style of painting, which is a traditional Japanese painting style that originated in the late 19th century. He was one of the leading artists of the Taisho period (1912-1926) and the early Showa period (1926-1989).

Toko studied under the famous Nihonga artist Kaburagi Kiyokata, and was heavily influenced by the style of the Rinpa school of painting, which emphasizes the use of bold colors, decorative motifs, and gold leaf. He is known for his intricate depictions of Japanese landscapes, flora and fauna, and scenes of everyday life.

Toko was also a teacher and mentor to many younger artists, and was a founding member of the Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute), which was established in 1906 to promote the development of traditional Japanese art.
