NASA’s “Galaxy of Horrors” art series was originally released just before Halloween in October 2020. Despite their fun and creative design, the posters are actually inspired by real astronomical phenomena. For instance, a dead galaxy is characterized by the absence of new star birth, resulting in a majority of long-lived, small, and red stars that emit a crimson glow. In addition, when dead stars collide, they can cause a gamma ray burst, which is considered the most luminous type of explosion in the universe. Dark matter, another phenomenon depicted in the posters, is not just a fictional concept, but a mysterious form of matter that exerts gravitational forces on stars within galaxies and holds galaxy clusters together, although its composition remains unknown to scientists. The posters were made so that viewers can imagine what each of these phenomena may look like—plus they elicit the eerie feelings we all look forward to during the spooky season!
