About

North American Herpetology is a book about the reptiles and amphibians (collectively known as "herps" or "herptiles") of North America, written by John Edwards Holbrook and published in 1836. At the time of its publication, the study of herpetology was still a relatively new and emerging field, and Holbrook's book was one of the earliest comprehensive works on the subject.

Holbrook was an American physician and naturalist who lived from 1794 to 1871. He was born in South Carolina and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1816. However, his true passion was natural history, and he spent much of his career studying and documenting the flora and fauna of the southeastern United States. Holbrook was particularly interested in herpetology, and he made significant contributions to the study of North American reptiles and amphibians.

The illustrations in the book were drawn by John James Audubon, an accomplished naturalist and artist who collaborated with Holbrook on several of his publications. They were engraved by William E. Hitchcock, one of the leading engravers of natural history illustrations in the 19th century.
