About

Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) was a prominent Japanese artist who was active during the Meiji and Taisho periods. He is known for his works in the Nihonga style of painting, which is a traditional Japanese painting style that originated in the late 19th century and combines traditional Japanese techniques with Western-style painting.

Gekko was born in Edo (now Tokyo) and studied painting under the famous artist Kawanabe Kyosai. He was heavily influenced by the ukiyo-e style of painting, which depicts scenes of everyday life and popular culture. Gekko's work often included depictions of Japanese history, folklore, and mythology, as well as portraits of famous figures from Japanese culture.

Gekko was also known for his illustrations and design work, and was involved in the production of various publications, including newspapers, magazines, and books. He was a member of the Imperial Art Academy and was awarded many prizes for his work, including the Order of the Rising Sun.
