About

Ogawa Kazumasa (1860-1929) was a Japanese photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur who was instrumental in the development of the art of Japanese photography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in Kyoto and initially worked as an apprentice in a photography studio before opening his own studio in Tokyo.

Kazumasa was known for his mastery of the collotype printing process, a photographic printing technique that produces highly detailed and tonally rich images. He used this process to create photobooks and other publications that were highly sought after for their artistic and technical quality.

In addition to his work as a photographer and publisher, Kazumasa was also a pioneer in the field of color photography. He developed a number of techniques for creating color photographs, including the use of stencils and multiple exposures, and his works in this medium were highly acclaimed.
