About

The Philadelphia Sunday Press was a newspaper publication based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that was in circulation from 1885 to 1920. It was founded by James Elverson, a prominent newspaper publisher, and was known for its innovative approach to journalism and its emphasis on investigative reporting.

Under Elverson's leadership, the Philadelphia Sunday Press became known for its hard-hitting investigative reporting on a wide range of topics, including corruption in local government, labor issues, and social injustice. The newspaper's reporting helped to expose many cases of wrongdoing and led to significant reforms in Philadelphia and beyond.

The Philadelphia Sunday Press was also notable for its support of women's suffrage, which was still a controversial issue at the time. The newspaper published articles and editorials in support of the suffrage movement and gave prominent coverage to women's rights rallies and events.

The Philadelphia Sunday Press continued to be a major force in Philadelphia journalism until its closure in 1920, when it merged with another newspaper to form the Philadelphia Record. However, its legacy lived on in the many innovations and accomplishments that it achieved during its 35 years of publication.

These illustrations were done by George Reiter Brill, a well-known illustrator who worked for the Philadelphia Sunday Press during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was known for his distinctive style, which combined detailed pen-and-ink drawings with bold and colorful watercolor washes.
