About
Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance period. He was born in Florence, Italy, and trained under Fra Filippo Lippi before opening his own workshop in the city.
Botticelli is best known for his graceful, lyrical style and his depictions of mythological and religious themes. His most famous works include the “Birth of Venus” and “Primavera,” both of which feature graceful, idealized figures set against lush, verdant landscapes. He was also a master of portrait painting and produced many striking images of Florentine society.
Botticelli was heavily influenced by the Humanist movement, which placed great value on classical learning and the revival of ancient Greek and Roman art. His work often reflects this interest, incorporating classical motifs and themes.
Despite his considerable success during his lifetime, Botticelli fell out of favor in the centuries following his death, and his work was largely forgotten. It was not until the 19th century that his work was rediscovered and he was recognized as one of the greatest artists of the Renaissance.
