About

Santo Kyoden (1761-1816) was a Japanese writer and artist known for his popular illustrated books and kabuki plays. He was born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and began his career as a poet before transitioning to fiction writing and publishing. His works often depicted the lives of common people and were known for their humor, satire, and criticism of society. Santo Kyoden's art was also highly regarded, particularly his paintings of beautiful women and kabuki actors. Despite facing censorship and financial difficulties throughout his career, Santo Kyoden continued to produce numerous works that remain influential in Japanese literature and art today.

Shin Bijin Awase Jihitsu Kagami is one of Santo Kyoden's most famous works, translated as "A New Collection of Celebrated Beauties: A Mirror of Womanly Virtues." It is a series of illustrated books that were published in 1792 and depicted various women of the Edo period, focusing on their physical beauty, fashion, and social status. The series was popular among the public and played a significant role in shaping the ideal image of feminine beauty during that time. The book's popularity and Santo Kyoden's skills as an artist contributed to his reputation as a master of bijinga, or paintings of beautiful women, and helped establish him as a major figure in Japanese art and literature.
