About

Exploration scientifique de l'Algérie was a comprehensive scientific survey of Algeria, which was then a French colony. The survey was conducted between 1839 and 1842 and involved a team of more than 150 scientists and researchers from France and other European countries. The goal of the survey was to study the natural history, geology, archaeology, and ethnography of Algeria, and to provide a detailed description and analysis of the region's physical and cultural landscape.

The survey was sponsored by the French government, and it was led by the French geologist and naturalist Philippe-Isidore Picot de Lapeyrouse. The team included many notable scientists and scholars, including the botanist Jean-Baptiste Édouard Bornet, the geologist Antoine Étienne d'Abbadie, and the archaeologist Louis-Adolphe Bertillon.

The survey had a significant impact on the scientific study of North Africa, and it helped to establish Algeria as an important center of biological and cultural diversity. The results of the survey were published in a multi-volume series of books and reports, which included detailed descriptions and illustrations of the flora, fauna, and cultural artifacts of Algeria.
