About
Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) was a Japanese painter, lacquerware artist, and printmaker who is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and influential artists of the late Edo period. He was born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and trained as a painter under several masters of the ukiyo-e style.
Zeshin's work was highly influential in the development of the Japanese art nouveau movement, which was characterized by its use of natural motifs and stylized forms. He was also a major influence on the development of the mingei (folk crafts) movement, which sought to revive traditional Japanese craft techniques and materials.
