About
Shubi Gakan is a series of woodblock prints created by the Japanese artist Nanbara Sakujirō (1885-1954), a master printmaker who lived in Tokyo known for his depictions of traditional Japanese life and culture. Shubi Gakan is a series of prints that he created in the 1920s, which depicts various scenes from the Chinese classic novel "The Water Margin" (also known as "Outlaws of the Marsh" or "All Men Are Brothers").
"The Water Margin" is a story about a group of bandits who fight against corrupt government officials during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) in China. Nanbara Sakujirō's prints capture the drama and action of the story, depicting battle scenes, duels, and moments of triumph and defeat.
The Shubi Gakan series is notable for its use of vibrant colors and intricate details, which were achieved through the use of multiple woodblocks and careful registration of the prints. The prints are also notable for their large size, with some measuring up to two feet in height.
