About

The Fishes of India; Being a Natural History of the Fishes Known to Inhabit the Seas and Fresh Waters of India, Burma, and Ceylon is a book written by Francis Day, a British zoologist and ichthyologist, and published in 1875.

The book is a comprehensive study of the fish species that are native to the waters of India, Burma, and Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka). It includes detailed descriptions of the physical characteristics, distribution, and behavior of each species, as well as illustrations to aid in identification.

Day's work on The Fishes of India was groundbreaking, as it was one of the first scientific studies of fish populations in the region. He spent many years collecting specimens and gathering information from local fishermen and naturalists, which allowed him to provide a detailed account of the fish fauna of the region.

The book is still considered a valuable resource for ichthyologists and naturalists interested in the fish species of South Asia. Day's contributions to the field of ichthyology are also recognized through the naming of several fish species after him, including the Day's Stingray (Dasyatis dayi) and Day's Glassfish (Chanda dayi).
