Hummingbirds are a family of small, brightly colored birds known for their rapid wing beats and hovering flight. They are found only in the Americas, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, and there are over 300 species of hummingbirds.

Hummingbirds have unique adaptations for their hovering flight, such as a specialized shoulder joint and strong pectoral muscles that allow them to flap their wings up to 80 times per second. They are also known for their long, slender bills and tongues, which they use to feed on nectar from flowers. Hummingbirds are important pollinators for many plant species, and they also feed on insects and spiders.

Passerines, also known as perching birds, are the largest order of birds, comprising over half of all bird species. They are found all over the world and are known for their diverse beak shapes, plumage colors, and songs.

Passerines are characterized by their feet, which have three toes facing forward and one toe facing backward, allowing them to perch and grasp branches and twigs. They are also known for their highly developed vocal abilities, and many species have complex songs that they use for communication and mating purposes. Passerines have a wide range of diets, including seeds, fruits, insects, and small animals. They are important in their ecosystems as seed dispersers, insect predators, and pollinators.

This collection comes from Nouveau recueil général de planches peintes d'oiseaux (New General Collection of Painted Plates of Birds), a book published in the early 1800s that features detailed illustrations of various species of birds, including many rare and exotic species. The book was created by several prominent ornithologists and artists, and the illustrations are considered some of the finest examples of bird art from the period.
