About
Nightjars, also known as goatsuckers, are a family of nocturnal and crepuscular birds that are found around the world. They are characterized by their cryptic plumage, large eyes, and wide gape, which they use to catch insects in flight. Some well-known species of nightjars include the common nighthawk, the European nightjar, and the chuck-will's-widow.
Martins are a group of birds in the swallow family that are known for their aerial acrobatics and insect-catching abilities. They are found throughout the world and are often associated with human-made structures such as buildings and bridges. Some well-known species of martins include the purple martin, the cliff swallow, and the barn swallow.
This collection comes from Nouveau recueil général de planches peintes d'oiseaux (New General Collection of Painted Plates of Birds), a book published in the early 1800s that features detailed illustrations of various species of birds, including many rare and exotic species. The book was created by several prominent ornithologists and artists, and the illustrations are considered some of the finest examples of bird art from the period.
