About

Thomas Moran was an American painter and printmaker known for his landscapes of the American West. He was born on February 12, 1837, in Bolton, England, and died on August 25, 1926, in Santa Barbara, California.

Moran emigrated to the United States with his family when he was a child, and he grew up in Philadelphia. He began his career as an illustrator and later turned to painting, focusing on landscapes and seascapes. Moran was a member of the Hudson River School, a group of American artists who were known for their paintings of the natural world.

Moran is best known for his depictions of the American West, which he first visited in 1871 as part of an expedition to Yellowstone National Park. He was inspired by the grandeur of the landscapes he encountered, and he sought to capture their beauty in his paintings. He often used dramatic colors and sweeping brushstrokes to convey the scale and majesty of the Western landscape.
