Torii Kiyonaga (1752-1815) was born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and studied under the artist Torii Kiyomitsu, who was his uncle. He later established his own independent style, which was characterized by a focus on graceful and elegant figures, delicate lines, and a soft color palette.

Kiyonaga's bijin-ga were particularly renowned for their attention to detail, with the artist often depicting the intricate patterns and textures of the clothing and accessories worn by his subjects. He also had a keen sense of composition, creating prints that were both visually striking and emotionally evocative.

In addition to his bijin-ga, Kiyonaga was also known for his prints of kabuki actors, which were notable for their detailed depictions of costumes, makeup, and expressions. Kiyonaga's work was highly influential in the development of ukiyo-e during the late Edo period, and his elegant, refined style was widely imitated by later artists.
